Pellon 551 Sol-U-Film

Clear water-soluble film. Lay it on top of a napped fabric — towelling, fleece, corduroy — so the stitches sit on the surface instead of sinking into the pile, then rinse it away and nothing is left behind.
Also the base for free-standing lace: stitch the design onto film alone and wash the film out.
