Clips or pins for binding?
Clips, for anything thick. A pin has to pierce the layers, which distorts the binding and leaves a hole in coated or tightly woven fabric. Clips hold the same layers flat without either problem, and they do not end up under the needle.
How many clips do I actually need?
For a lap quilt, thirty is comfortable. You clip ahead of the needle and move them along as you sew, so you never need one clip per inch. Fifty is plenty for a queen, and a second pack means you are not unclipping just to keep going.
